Microsoft is working on releasing a new Service Pack (updates to Windows XP), called SP2. This Service Pack is going to have lots of fixes that have been released on www.windowsupdate.com, but also some new security features. A pop-up ad blocker, and application firewall is turned on by default. This flys in the face of Zone Alarm and other applicatoins, but given NOBODY seems to run those, having a built in one that is 'good' enough for family members, and allow us Geeks to guy something more powerful. I just hope they don't have a quick... disable all button that will make the thing useless. :( Its 340MB so expect Microsoft to offer CD's for people to obtain the update. Since its Free, you can ask me to make you a copy of it. I want everyone I know running the released version of this. Submitted by tfiske on Fri, 05/30/2008 - 21:30.

As many people now a days, I'm a big MySpace user. With all the ability to customize the site, alot of people put tons of 'fluff' on their page, and MySpace themselves is constantly putting new features and people flashing at me to look at. Well after some work, I found a nice GreaseMonkey script that disables users themes (read this makes their home page look like the default page). It makes things look a little cleaner. Shortly after realizing I could clean off themes, I read up on how to remove HTML from a page. So I wrote the following script to remove the big blue bar from the top of MySpace, and several other areas that I find annoying on my logged in view. Submitted by tfiske on Wed, 04/26/2006 - 17:54.
Found this link which solves a huge memory issue when I'm using SessionSaver to keep 40 tabs open at the same time. Current memory use before implementing this as 161,680KB + 368,644KB of memory, 132 Tabs open... "The Firefox memory leak is not a bug. It's a feature! The 'feature' is how the pages are cached in a tabbed environment." From the article: "To improve performance when navigating (studies show that 39% of all page navigations are renavigations to pages visited less than 10 pages ago, usually using the back button), Firefox 1.5 implements a Back-Forward cache that retains the rendered document for the last five session history entries for each tab. This is a lot of data. If you have a lot of tabs, Firefox's memory usage can climb dramatically. It's a trade-off. What you get out of it is faster performance as you navigate the web." As part of Burning Man, one always rides their bike around the playa. This year a group of us are going to get lights for our bikes to make them more visable. While researching, we came across the following kit, that lets you upload your own images into the lightbar, and if desired add animation to the image. As you can see above. Each of these kits runs about $40 a tire, and to get fluid graphics at slower speeds you actually need 2-3 bars. So it starts to add up quickly. But the idea of soldering this all together and making it work just sounds cool! Submitted by tfiske on Mon, 03/20/2006 - 18:20.
Well just got an IM from a friend of mine that bought a $400 palm based PDA phone, only to find out the phone is severly crippled. A phone that has a Palm OS, should have no problem doing 2-way SMS text and MMS. But as you read the review of this phone online, (which seems to be a good site), you see many features lacking. Some people on the internet have filed the void, and created some applications that allow this core cell phone technology to work again. Submitted by tfiske on Mon, 02/20/2006 - 23:19.
I am getting a new DVD burner that supports Dual Layer, I was surprised to see how the price on DVD burners has dropped through the floor. For about $50, you can get a new dual layer burner. I needed to be able to do 3 things with this burner. 1) Rip in existing CD's very fast. 2) Burn DVD-R's with my existing media, and 3) have future proofing by getting Dual Layer support. I finally selected the NEC ND-3550A because of its Read (22x with EAC's secure mode) ability in combination with its ability to do high speed burns. Dual Layer DVD+R at 8x, and DVD-R at 6x. The only review I could find was on the 3540A's. I also looked at the Pioneer, Sony, and Plextor, and found for the price performance this was the best for my needs. Also, there was no review for the 3550A's, so I based my purchase off the 3540A's. Submitted by tfiske on Thu, 01/19/2006 - 17:43.
One of the interesting things about the new Video iPod is the ability to subscribe to Video Podcasts, and have the ability to sync them to your Video iPod... this all assumes that you have an Video iPod, which I don't. But I do have a excellent Sony PSP, which actually has a larger screen. I have also found that the most recent Google Video site, allows you to download the uploaded content in PSP format as well as iPod. So I set about trying to make this work Bottom line... I now can podcast the Suicide Girls Video and transcode it into PSP format and have an excellent viewing experience on my PSP. There are notes on how to do the same with the DVD's in my cabinet... but that is another weekend project. Submitted by tfiske on Thu, 12/01/2005 - 19:48.
This is a good site for finding coupons for car rentals... I am sure the main site has links to coupons for other things, but when you want to rent a car for $36 a day, or $140 for a week... this is the site. http://www.rentalcodes.com/budget.html |
